Why is excess sodium bad?
The kidneys have trouble keeping the excess sodium in the bloodstream. The body then holds water to dilute the sodium. This way, the amount of fluid and volume of blood increases which puts more pressure on the blood vessels. As a result, it can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease. It causes 2/3rds of all heart strokes and 50% of heart disease. In fact, higher intake of salt, sodium or salty foods is linked to an increase in stomach cancer as well. A dietary change can help you lower your risk. Eat more fresh fruits and green vegetables, which are naturally high potassium and low in sodium. Eat less bread, cheese and processed meat or other processed foods.
